    • To Lie (liggen): Dit gaat over een positie. Je doet het zelf. Er komt geen lijdend voorwerp achter.
      • I want to lie on the couch.
    • To Lie (liegen): Onwaarheid spreken.
      • Don’t lie to me!

Groep B: Iets doen met een voorwerp

    • To Lay (leggen/plaatsen): Je legt iets anders neer.
      • Please lay your books on the desk.

BetekenisHele werkwoord (Present)Verleden tijd (Past Simple)Voltooid deelwoord (Past Participle)
    LiggenLieLayLain
    LiegenLieLiedLied
    LeggenLayLaidLaid

Pas op: “Yesterday I lay on the bed” betekent dus “Gisteren lag ik op bed”. Het is de verleden tijd van lie.

    1. Ja? Gebruik dan Lay.
      • I (put) my keys here / I lay my keys here.
    2. Nee? Gebruik dan Lie.
      • I (put) on the floor / Klopt niet. Het moet zijn: I lie on the floor.
