  • je niet weet wie de actie uitvoert (“My bike was stolen” – je weet niet door wie);
  • de uitvoerder niet belangrijk is (“The road is cleaned every morning” – wie dat doet, is niet zo relevant);

Voorbeeld in verschillende tijden:

  1. Present Simple
    • Active (actief): The chef makes the cake.
    • Passive (passief): The cake is made by the chef.
  2. Present Continuous
    • Active: The chef is making the cake.
    • Passive: The cake is being made by the chef.
  3. Present Perfect
    • Active: The chef has made the cake.
    • Passive: The cake has been made by the chef.
  4. Past Simple
    • Active: The chef made the cake.
    • Passive: The cake was made by the chef.
  5. Past Continuous
    • Active: The chef was making the cake.
    • Passive: The cake was being made by the chef.
  6. Past Perfect
    • Active: The chef had made the cake.
    • Passive: The cake had been made by the chef.

3. Van actieve zin naar passieve zin

Een actieve zin heeft meestal de volgorde:
(onderwerp) + (werkwoord) + (lijdend voorwerp)

Bijvoorbeeld:
I drive the car

Hier is “the car” enkelvoud, dus gebruik je “is”.
  4. Eventueel kun je “by me” toevoegen om aan te geven wie de actie uitvoert.

Actief: I drive the car.
Passief: The car is driven (by me).

  2. Er staat “by …” in de zin
Als in de zin een constructie voorkomt zoals “by the chef”, “by me”, “by someone” enzovoort, duidt dat vaak op een passieve vorm.
    • “The cake was made by the chef.”
    • Door wie? Door de chef.
  3. Vorm van “to be” + voltooid deelwoord
Als je een vorm van “to be” (is, was, were, has been, enz.) ziet, gevolgd door het voltooid deelwoord (bijvoorbeeld “made”, “done”, “seen”, “driven”, …), is de zin vaak passief.
    • “The house is being cleaned.” (continuous passief)

5. Onregelmatige werkwoorden

Bijvoorbeeld:

  • “to drive” → “drove” → “driven”
  • “to eat” → “ate” → “eaten”
  • “to write” → “wrote” → “written”

Exercise 1: De passive herkennen
