Wat is het verschil?

Bij regelmatige werkwoorden volg je een vaste regel. In het Engels plak je simpelweg -ed achter het hele werkwoord in de verleden tijd en het voltooid deelwoord.

  • Voorbeeld: walk > walked > walked.

Bij onregelmatige werkwoorden werkt dat anders. Deze hebben hun eigen, unieke vormen die je simpelweg uit je hoofd moet leren. Ze eindigen in de verleden tijd dus niet op -ed.

  • Voorbeeld: come > came > come.

Zit er logica in?

Hoewel onregelmatige werkwoorden op het eerste gezicht willekeurig lijken, kun je ze vaak indelen in handige groepen. Dit helpt je om ze sneller te herkennen en te onthouden:

  • De “Drieling” (3x hetzelfde): Bij deze groep verandert er helemaal niets.
    • Voorbeelden: hit – hit – hit / cut – cut – cut / put – put – put.
  • De “Tweeling” (2x hetzelfde): Hier zijn de verleden tijd en het voltooid deelwoord identiek.
    • Voorbeelden: buy – bought – bought / feel – felt – felt / send – sent – sent.
  • De “Klinkerwissel” (i – a – u): Een bekende groep waarbij de klinker in een vaste volgorde verspringt.
    • Voorbeelden: sing – sang – sung / drink – drank – drunk / swim – swam – swum.
  • De “Terugkeer” (1e en 3e hetzelfde): De eerste en de laatste vorm zijn gelijk.
    • Voorbeelden: come – came – come / run – ran – run.

Tip: In plaats van een alfabetische lijst te leren, werkt het vaak veel sneller om deze “families” bij elkaar te oefenen. Zoek de patronen en je zult zien dat je ze minder snel vergeet!

Hoe zit het in het Nederlands?

Ter vergelijking: ook in het Nederlands maken we dit onderscheid.

  • Regelmatig: gooi – gooide – gegooid (eindigt op -de of -te).
  • Onregelmatig: loop – liep – gelopen (de klank verandert volledig).

Let op: Een onregelmatige vorm eindigt in de verleden tijd nooit op -ing. Die vorm gebruik je alleen voor acties die op dit moment bezig zijn (de continuous).
